With all the concern about COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and other viral infections like the flu, we need to look at what we can do to support our natural defense system. This is the time to look at your lifestyle and see what you are capable of changing. Proper hand sanitation is the number one method of control, but what else can you do?
To BOOST IMMUNITY, doctors recommend fruits and vegetables and no vitamin or mineral deficiencies. Information is lacking on boosting the immune system against COVID-19, but medical experts recommend a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables and no vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
“The best defense against coronavirus — other than being chronologically young — is being biologically young — i.e., very healthy,” said Dr. David Katz, co-author of “How to Eat: All Your Food and Diet Questions Answered.” “That benefit will not go away when this acute peril abates, and should be a priority for everyone, all the time.”
Dr. Katz is also the former director of Yale University’s Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center and now leads the True Health Initiative and Diet ID Inc. He said a diverse diet of whole vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains, nuts and seeds “does have an impact when faced with infection.” A U.S. Dietary Guideline report notes that “three-fourths of the population has an eating pattern that is low in vegetables, fruits, dairy and oils.” Most Americans also “exceed the recommendations for added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium,” the report said.
To boost the immune system, Dr. Katz recommends:
• Fruits and vegetables in your diet is one of the best defenses to boost your immune system agains the coronavirus.
• Fiber, which stabilizes blood insulin and glucose, reduces inflammation and improves immune function.
• Antioxidants, including flavonoids and carotenoids, to “protect our cells from oxidative injury as our immune system does its job.”
• Zinc from mushrooms, grains and seafood to improve the function of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell.
• Unsaturated oils from seeds, nuts, olives and avocado, with or without fish and seafood, to prevent wayward inflammatory responses.
“Nothing we know about diet, nutrients and foods can substitute for the effects of careful personal hygiene and relevant social distancing,” Dr. Katz said. Stress, loneliness, smoking, lack of exercise, excess weight, alcohol consumption and lack of sleep can weaken the immune system, according to Harvard University.
